Dropped passes are the most painful thing an NFL wide receiver can do, and they have to hurt, especially when you’re a rookie looking to establish yourself as more than just a depth piece.
One wide receiver is handling a recent brutal dropped pass by using it as motivation.
In the New England Patriots’ recent 14-13 preseason loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, all eyes were on Pats rookie No. 3 pick Drake Maye, who unleashed a beautiful deep ball up the right side of the field that was placed perfectly to drop right into rookie Javon Baker’s hands, but Baker was unable to bring it in and dropped the pass.

Baker posted a photo of the drop on his Instagram account as motivation and to hopefully, put the play behind him and move on.
The 4th-round pick out of UCF is looking to add some explosiveness to a receiving corps that had none of it last season, as the Pats went through the 2023 season with arguably the league’s worst collection of wide receivers.
Overhauling the WR unit was a big priority this offseason, and it was a clear focus in the draft by selecting Baker and second-round pick Ja’Lynn Polk out of Washington.
Baker averaged a ridiculous 22.5 yards per catch at UCF last season as he caught 43 passes for 966 yards and six touchdowns, which is a skill the Pats desperately need after DeVante Parker led the team with just 11.9 yards per reception last year among receivers who saw at least 25 targets.
Rookies make mistakes, and this one won’t define Baker as he looks to establish himself as Maye’s go-to deep threat for many years to come.
