The NBA playoffs are right around the corner, which is a cause for great celebration.
It’s also a time that fans across the league try to think of ways to make the regular and postseason better.
As great as the NBA is right now, there are surely ways to improve it.
Nick Wright has a very novel idea about how to tweak and improve the playoffs.
Sitting down on the Colin Cowherd Podcast, Wright suggested that the top teams at the end of the regular season be given the ability to choose who they play against in the opening round.
He said this would turn the first rounds of the postseason into “grudge matches” that would reward teams who played hard during the regular season.
Wright noted how the second-seed Boston Celtics have been better than the third-seed Philadelphia 76ers but they are being “rewarded” by possibly taking on the intimidating Miami Heat in the first round.
Meanwhile, the lesser 76ers are getting to square off with the Brooklyn Nets, who aren’t nearly as competitive.
If teams were able to select their opponents, it would add a whole other layer of competition and would strip certain squads of the strategy they undertake in the finals weeks of the season.
This would certainly be a divisive move if the NBA pursued it.
However, the chances of the league tweaking their playoff model at all are slim.
That’s because they are generally slow to make changes.
Additionally, they shook up the way the postseason works just a few years ago when they implemented the play-in tournament.
Will they ever think about trying out Wright’s idea?
Maybe not, but it sure has a lot of fans talking.
