After a successful run to the Western Conference Finals in the 2023 NBA Playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers look primed to replicate their success after revamping their roster.
The Lakers re-signed their key free agents as well as brought in more talent to supplement their depth at every position.
However, all eyes will be on the team’s two stars as LeBron James and Anthony Davis are healthy after spending the offseason rehabbing from their respective foot injuries.
James has always been the constant in Los Angeles since he arrived in the summer of 2018, but he has begun gradually ceding more of the leadership burden to Davis.
As James continues to climb up in age, Davis has taken it upon himself to carry the team on both ends which he did quite well when his co-star went down in the regular season.
Going into the 2023-24 NBA season, Nick Wright believes that Davis has to be the number one option for them to win another title via First Things First.
Recently, Lebron called Davis the “face of the franchise,” and Wright clarified what he meant by that.
“LeBron understands if the Lakers are going to win the title, LeBron has to be the 2nd best guy. And I believe they can win the title IF LeBron is the 2nd best guy & he’s 90% of what he was last year,” Wright said.

Although James remains one of the best players in the league, Davis is clearly at the point of his career where he is ready to assume more responsibility.
The transition of power also makes sense because the Lakers should be trying as hard as possible to keep James fresh for another potential deep postseason run.
Davis has always had the talent and skill to lead a championship team and this is the year for him to prove it.
