After hiring JJ Redick to be their new head coach, replacing the recently fired Darvin Ham, and selecting Dalton Knecht and Bronny James in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers headed into NBA free agency this past weekend determined to make a splash.
Superstar forward LeBron James made it clear to the organization that he wanted the team to make a substantial move and was willing to take a pay cut in his new contract in order to help the team sign another star player to play alongside him and Anthony Davis in Los Angeles.
Ultimately, the team’s top target was former Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson, who agreed to a three-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Monday.
With the Lakers seemingly capable of convincing any other stars around the league to sign with them, the team has received a ton of criticism, with Nick Wright of FOX Sports being baffled as to why the team can’t get anything done right now via First Things First.
“I am baffled at the total inability of Rob Pelinka to get anything done, ever,” Wright said.

With the Lakers unable to bring in Thompson in a sign-and-trade scenario with the Warriors, the team is now scrambling to explore other options, whether it is trades or free agents still available like DeMar DeRozan of the Chicago Bulls.
Although there are still options, it is safe to say this offseason has not been kind to the storied franchise, and some moves need to be made for this team to compete with the best of the best in the West moving forward.
