With the San Francisco 49ers being arguably the best all-around team in the NFL heading into Week 5, there’s been a lot of talk about second-year quarterback Brock Purdy and whether he’s thriving due to the system that head coach Kyle Shanahan has put in place in the Bay Area.
Even though Purdy has yet to lose a game in the regular season, going all the way back to when he took over for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo last season, he continues to get doubted, with everyone seemingly waiting for him to fail.
All anyone says when referring to Purdy these days is that he’s a “system quarterback” and isn’t really as good as his record and stats would suggest.
Shanahan addressed this notion earlier this week and called it “ridiculous,” and he’s right, or Trey Lance would be a success in San Francisco, and Garoppolo wouldn’t have been pushed out of town because the system is so good for quarterbacks.
However, as he said on First Things First, Nick Wright of FOX Sports still thinks Purdy is nothing more than a system quarterback.
“Mike Shanahan built a system with the Broncos that made any RB look great. Kyle Shanahan, as the league has evolved, has taken the torch from his father & made a system that makes almost any QB look pretty good. … Of course Brock Purdy is a system QB.”

Ironically enough, Purdy will be facing the toughest test of his NFL career in the regular season this week when the 49ers host Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium.
If Purdy can get the best of the Cowboys while putting up some solid numbers, he may start to keep the critics at bay because Dallas has arguably the best defense in the league.
It’ll be interesting to see how things turn out in Week 5 and what the narrative is next week regarding Purdy.
