After consecutive blowout losses to the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks, the Los Angeles Lakers seemed to have hit rock bottom during the 2023-24 NBA regular season, with the team a game below .500 (24-25) and seemingly lost on the basketball floor.
Although second-year head coach Darvin Ham has received the bulk of the blame for the team’s struggles this season, and he’s not without fault, the Lakers have had their two superstars healthy for the most part, and the excuses seem to be falling on deaf ears.
With the NBA trade deadline about a week away on February 8, the Lakers will be a team to watch with all sorts of drama starting to unfold with cryptic tweets by players and the team showing little to no effort on the floor.
Following the team’s loss on Tuesday, Nick Wright of FOX Sports talked about the Lakers on Wednesday and believes there’s nothing the team can do to solve its problems this season via First Things First.
“I don’t think the Lakers are a trade or a coach firing away from being able to win a championship,” Wright said. “I happen to think Laker ownership has been asleep at the wheel since Dr. Buss died, and they got bailed out that LeBron [James] wanted to play for them. … I don’t think there is a fix.”

Wright might be correct in his assessment of the Lakers at this point in the regular season, as a trade or two might not be the answer for this team because this squad seems broken right now.
However, the same thing was said last year before they moved Russell Westbrook, so general manager Rob Pelinka might have another trick up his sleeve.
