The Denver Nuggets couldn’t defend their crown as NBA champions.

Now, they’ve lost another key contributor to that championship by letting go of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

That’s why they need to make sure that their title core stays together for as long as they possibly can.

Jamal Murray is entering the final year of his contract, and there have been no updates regarding a potential extension.

Recently, he shrugged off those talks by stating that he was only focused on playing for Canada and he would handle those talks later, but the team can’t afford for this to become an uncomfortable situation.

With that in mind, GM Calvin Booth reaffirmed the team’s desire to get something done with Murray sooner rather than later (via SiriusXM NBA Radio).

He talked about how much they’ve cherished having him around since he entered the league, adding that keeping him is definitely of the utmost importance for the organization.

Murray is Nikola Jokic’s perfect sidekick, and he’s been one of the best playoff performers in the league for years now.

They have Jokic, Michael Porter Jr., and Aaron Gordon locked in for years to come, so it only makes sense that they take the same approach with their star guard.

The start of the season is just around the corner, but they will most likely wait until after the Olympics to ramp talks up with Murray.

Murray is eligible for up to a four-year, $208.5 million extension, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Nuggets are willing to meet that steep price.
