New York Mets catcher Omar Narvaez was one of the team’s offseason acquisitions.
He was expected to be a quality placeholder for top prospect Francisco Alvarez.
Narvaez has a strong defensive reputation and some occasional power to hit a few home runs here and there.
However, he left Wednesday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, his former team.
Alvarez is going to be trusted in a crucial role perhaps earlier than expected, because Narvaez’s absence will extend into June.
“Omar Narváez underwent imaging this morning that revealed a medium to high-grade strain of his left calf. He will be placed on the Injured List. A typical return to play for this type of injury is 8-9 weeks,” the Mets tweeted.

It’s crushing news for a Mets team that can’t have any more injuries affect their depth.
They are already down Jose Quintana and Justin Verlander, among others, and now Narvaez will be out for the next two months or so, probably more.
The team will now have to rely on Tomas Nido and Alvarez for catching duties.
They will have to be extremely cautious with Narvaez’s injury, because high-grade calf strains can be tricky injuries with a rather considerable re-aggravation chance.
The Mets need Narvaez’s experience and ability calling games to achieve their season objectives, though.
Hopefully, he can return and show no ill effects of the ailment.
In the meantime, Alvarez will be available for the Mets starting on Friday.
He will split time between catcher and designated hitter.
He offers a premium power bat with some contact questions, but an immense upside.
