For months, NFL insiders and analysts claimed it wasn’t a matter of whether Jordan Love would get a contract extension as much as it would be about when that would happen and how much money he would get.

The Green Bay Packers were always extremely confident in their quarterback, and GM Brian Gutekunst repeatedly talked about his desire to lock him up for the future.

However, it took them a little longer than expected, and Love may have taken things a little further than most people thought he would.

He let the team know that he wouldn’t show up to training camp unless he got a new contract, forcing the Packers’ hand to get a deal done.

They wound up giving him a four-year extension worth a whopping $220 million, making him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history.

With that in mind, Gutekunst addressed the media and shared his thoughts on the matter.

The executive revealed that the team actually felt very confident about giving him that kind of contract because of how poised he looked last season, proving that he was ready to embrace a leadership role and execute on the field (via The Game MKE).

Truth be told, giving that kind of money to a player after one year as a starter is a massive risk.

Then again, the Packers’ front office has always had the utmost confidence in him, even long before most people considered him to be an NFL-caliber player.

Now, there’s no room for excuses, with that kind of deal, he has to deliver.
