The air pollution stemming from Canadian wildfires that has affected the East Coast is not fully gone.
To the contrary, it is causing a troublesome delay at PNC Park, in Pittsburgh.
Today’s between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres will not begin on time.
Padres insider Kevin Acee, who covers every step the team takes for the San Diego Union-Tribune, explained the situation.
“It appears today’s Padres-Pirates game will not begin on time. The air here is horrible due to smoke from Canadian fires,” he said in an initial tweet.
He then informed that “the national anthem was completed about five minutes ago at PNC Park. The crowd was just informed of the delay. AQI is 197. That is ‘unhealthy.’”

According to airnow.gov, the AQI (air quality index) in Pittsburgh at the moment is considered “unhealthy”.
From 0 to 50, it falls in the “Good” category and there is no potential harm to people.
From 51 to 100, it is “Moderate”, from 101 to 150 the air is deemed “Unhealthy to Sensitive Groups”, and from 151 to 200, it is “Unhealthy”.
The definition of that classification is the following: “Some members of the general public may experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.”
That’s certainly not where you want to play a baseball game.
The 197 AQI is also dangerously close to the next classification, ranging from 201 to 300 and called “Very Unhealthy”.
