Things really couldn’t have gone much worse for the Carolina Panthers during the 2023 NFL season.
During the last few months, the Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich and a number of other assistant coaches, the quarterback they drafted No. 1 overall last year, Bryce Young, has struggled mightily this season and fresh off of throwing a drink at opposing fans last week, David Tepper is quickly developing a reputation as one of the worst owners in the league.
Carolina will be looking to turn things around in 2024, and if that’s going to happen, first, they need to find a new head coach.
According to some recent info from CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Panthers are reportedly expected to pursue current Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to be their new head coach (via CBSSports.com).
“Tepper is expected to swing for Lions OC Ben Johnson yet again, one year after Johnson pulled himself out of the running and stayed in Detroit,” Jones said.

This is some pretty intriguing info from Jones, considering Johnson took himself out of the running for the Carolina head coaching job after being interviewed for the role last year.
Now, after everything that has happened with the franchise, how could anyone think that the Panthers’ current head coaching job is one that the current Lions offensive coordinator would want?
There are expected to be a number of intriguing head-coaching openings around the NFL during the upcoming offseason, and Johnson is likely going to be pursued by multiple teams.
He would probably do a good job at helping Carolina rookie quarterback Bryce Young further his development.
But, at the same time, he could also just go become the head coach of a team like the Los Angeles Chargers, who already have a proven franchise signal-caller in place in Justin Herbert.
