The Indiana Pacers made a big gamble midway through the NBA season.
Trading for Pascal Siakam seemed perfect on paper, but it came with plenty of risk, as he wouldn’t commit to signing a contract extension right away.
Fortunately for them, it seems like it all worked out perfectly.
Even if they weren’t able to make it to the NBA Finals, Siakam was a seamless fit on the team and the community, and it seems like he’s looking forward to coming back.
Following the elimination, Siakam talked about his impending free agency, and he called being there ‘a blessing’ (via Michael Scotto).
Pacers forward Pascal Siakam on free agency: “All I can say is that it’s been a blessing. I’m really appreciative of everything. I think coming from where I come from, it means a lot. Siakam raved about how the fans there have embraced him and the basketball culture in the city, adding that he obviously wants to keep being a part of that.
The former Toronto Raptors star was just the player this team needed to make this run.
He contributed with big scoring performances while also being a factor on defense, locking down the glass, and even making plays for others.
Siakam is also the kind of veteran who plays within his role and isn’t a high-maintenance kind of scorer, although he can take care of things on his own if needed.
The Pacers kind of overachieved this season and could be ahead of schedule in their development, especially considering Bennedict Mathurin missed a big chunk of the campaign.
Keeping Siakam should be at the top of their priority list entering the offseason, and it seems like they both want the same thing.
