This year’s NBA MVP race has been one for the ages.

Just when everybody thought Nikola Jokic was going to run away with the award, Joel Embiid came out of the blue to make voters think twice.

Jokic has had a spectacular season and is on the verge of becoming the first center to average a triple-double, not to mention he’s leading the way in several advanced stats, including some defensive-oriented metrics.

However, the eye test, their one-on-one matchups, and some regular stats favor Embiid’s case over Jokic, and it seems like you couldn’t go wrong either way this time around.

Notably, fellow Cameroonian Pascal Siakam doesn’t feel that way.

Recently, the Toronto Raptors star gave Embiid the nod for MVP, stating that he’s dominating on both ends of the floor and helping his team win key basketball games.

Of course, Siakam admitted that he might be biased because of his relationship with Embiid and the fact that they come from the same place, but Embiid’s MVP case is as solid as it’ll ever be.

The biggest knock on Jokic is perhaps the fact that some of his colleagues — and even media members — refuse to believe that he’s the best player in the league, let alone for the third year in a row.

But each season should exist in a vacuum, and the question should be, “is Jokic the MVP this season?” instead of “should Jokic win three MVPs in a row?”

Whatever the case, Embiid could also be a worthy and deserving winner, but maybe we should take an in-depth look at the narrative around the award.
