The 2023 NFL Season opener was hyped up and certainly did not disappoint.

While this game wasn’t the high-flying affair many analysts projected, it was a hard-fought battle.

The Kansas City Chiefs were favored to win this game, even without Travis Kelce on the field.

Although they lost narrowly, this contest didn’t live up to the Chiefs’ high expectations.

In a press conference shared via Pro Football Talk, Patrick Mahomes highlighted his feelings on the opening night loss.

“Any time I lose, I’m embarrassed,” Mahomes said.

While he didn’t downplay his opponents, one can only assume that he is especially embarrassed to lose to a historically mediocre franchise.

However, these aren’t the same old Lions that many are used to.

Dan Campbell’s defense made Mahomes’ evening tougher than expected, and their offense did enough to stave off the Chiefs.

Mahomes’ final stat line was 21-39 on passing attempts, throwing for 226 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

This is a shortfall for Mahomes’ typical performances, especially since he is the reigning MVP.

To put his statistics into perspective, Mahomes only had three games in the 2022 regular season with less than 226 yards.

He had a 223-yard performance against the Cincinnati Bengals, a 224-yard game against the Seattle Seahawks, and 202 yards against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Mahomes believes he can do better, and is likely to bounce back in the Chiefs’ Week 2 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Kelce is slated to be back for that game, an encouraging sign for the reigning champs who will try and right the ship.
