It’s crazy to think that several NFL scouts weren’t high on Patrick Mahomes, calling him a wild card, a backup, a guy with a low ceiling, and whatnot.

But Andy Reid obviously knows a thing or two about offense and football, so he still trusted him to become a star in this league, even despite having a serviceable veteran on the team like Alex Smith.

Fast forward to today, and Mahomes is a multi-time MVP and multi-time Super Bowl champion, and some believe he’s got everything in his favor to go down as the greatest quarterback in the history of the game, even ahead of Tom Brady.

Needless to say, Mahomes has plenty to thank his coach for, which is why he took some time during his interview with Rob Maaddi for the AP Pro Football Podcast to talk about Reid’s importance and impact on his life and his career:

“He’s meant the world to me. He’s just the best,” Mahomes said, via NFL.com. “He’s the best coach, obviously, one of the best coaches of all time, but he’s just one of the best people of all time. He’s learned how to get the most out of me every day. He doesn’t let me be satisfied with where I’m at. He teaches me a ton.”

In hindsight, it’s crazy to think that nine teams actually let Mahomes slide in the NFL Draft and that another team actually agreed to trade with the Chiefs so they could move up to No. 10.

On the other hand, perhaps he wouldn’t have broken out in the same way if he had been drafted by, say, the Chicago Bears.

He could’ve been burnt out and exposed after just one season, but he was in a much more ideal situation in Kansas City, where he could sit for one year and learn the ropes of the game before eventually taking over.
