The New England Patriots haven’t been able to find Tom Brady’s successor yet.
Granted, replacing the greatest — or at least the winningest — quarterback of all time is no easy task.
However, they also haven’t exactly put their guys in a position to succeed, which is why they must take a different approach in the future.
With that in mind, new HC Jerod Mayo wants to avoid making the same mistakes as his predecessor, so he’s not going to rush Drake Maye into action.
As pointed out by Adam Schefter of ESPN, Mayo claimed that it was clear to them that, as of now, Jacoby Brissett was the most pro-ready guy they had at the position.

Brissett is a proven veteran, and while he’s been a backup for most of his career, he’s the perfect stopgap for them while Maye keeps working on his game.
Maye has all the physical tools to be a successful quarterback, and there have been plenty of positive reports about his work ethic and determination to improve as well.
Nonetheless, there are also concerns about his mechanics, accuracy, and overall decision-making.
Those things are all fixable, but it will take time, so he was never expected to be the starter right out of the gate.
Then again, who knows? Perhaps the Patriots will reconsider that stance at some point in the season and give him a chance to showcase his skills out there.
For now, he’s just not ready.
