The New England Patriots made a strong statement in this year’s draft by selecting Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick.
Maye was a polarizing player heading into the draft, as analysts seemed torn, wondering how his collegiate game would translate to the NFL.
Patriots fans were cautiously optimistic about Maye, as he represented a fresh start for the team at a vital position.
While there was some hope for Maye heading into training camp, he hasn’t played as well as many expected to this point.
Patriots beat reporter Taylor Kyles discussed this in a recent segment of his appearance on NBCS Sports Boston, which was shared on Twitter by the Patriots on CLNS Media.
“If we’re talking about who’s going to start Week 1, I’m not remotely ready to say Drake Maye the way I was maybe a week, a week and a half ago,” Kyles said.

Before training camp, Kyles seemed ready to embrace Maye as the starter, as he believed Maye would rise to the occasion.
With his suboptimal start in mind, Kyles is now under the impression that Jacoby Brissett will be under center for the Patriots to start the season.
Maye might just need some more time to adapt to playing in an NFL offense, as has been the case for many rookies in recent seasons.
Some teams, like the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers, for example, have allowed their rookies to sit and learn for at least a year, which seems to have panned out well for them.
How will the Patriots’ approach with Maye help their chances of success moving forward?
