The New England Patriots have struggled to find Tom Brady’s replacement since he left the team.
They tried to fill the void with Cam Newton and Mac Jones, but neither player worked out well.
After these two failed experiments, the Patriots turned to this year’s draft, selecting Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick.
Maye was a heavily debated prospect heading into the draft, but the Patriots were confident in his ability to succeed at the next level.
Despite his draft position, many expected Maye to sit for a year, learning behind a veteran like Jacoby Brissett.
This has been the message from many reporters throughout training camp and the preseason, especially considering how Maye has performed.
However, Jerod Mayo has yet to name a Week 1 starter, leaving the door open for Maye to take the job.
Insider Greg Bedard discussed his frustrations with Mayo’s comments in a recent segment of the Greg Bedard Patriots Podcast.
“To me, that’s not a competition, and it means that they’re going with Jacoby Brissett as the opening day starter,” Bedard said.
“That’s not a competition.”@GregABedard isn’t buying Jerod Mayo’s comments suggesting he doesn’t know who his opening-day QB1 is.

Bedard has watched a lot of the Patriots training camp.
He indicated that Brissett has taken 90 percent of the first-team snaps, which tends to show what a team will do in the regular season.
Injuries can certainly throw a wrench in this plan, but otherwise, teams don’t usually stray from what they do in practice.
With Brissett being the likely starter, it will be interesting to see how the Patriots fare this season, and if Maye will get any opportunities to play.
