The New England Patriots knew that Drake Maye was a work in progress when they took him in the 2024 NFL Draft.
As physically gifted as he was, the quarterback had some things to clean up in his mechanics and footwork, and some were also worried about his decision-making.
He’s still young, and some quarterbacks need time on the sidelines before being ready to play, so it wasn’t much of a surprise to see the Patriots announce that Jacoby Brissett would be their starter.
However, even though that does make sense, Patriots insider Andrew Callahan questions whether they’ve given Maye a legitimate chance to compete for a starting spot.
“It is odd to me that this is the way they are handling it,” Callahan said.

The Boston Herald reporter argued that Maye has only gotten to practice with the second-team offense, adding that the only chance he got to play behind the first-team offensive line was in a preseason game in which he was there for just six snaps.
Truth be told, there’s no reason for the Patriots to have Joe Milton III playing significant minutes in a preseason game when your quarterback for the future could be out there getting those snaps.
Also, it’s not like the Patriots have much depth in the offensive line or at wide receiver, so giving Maye work with the second team might not do much to help his case or his development.
It makes sense to be patient, especially after how things went down with Mac Jones.
Then again, the Pats also must give Maye a chance to actually better himself and compete for his spot.
