Last season, the New England Patriots were an absolute disaster on offense, as the team struggled to function without longtime offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels calling the shots on the sidelines for Mac Jones and company.
With McDaniels leaving New England in favor of taking the head coaching job with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team chose not to immediately replace him, which turned into a huge mistake, with the offense being a mess from Week 1 onwards.
No one was more impacted by McDaniels’ departure and no viable replacement being brought in than Jones, who was coming off a Pro Bowl rookie season and hoping to take his game to the next level.
Things got so shaky for Jones that a quarterback controversy started brewing in New England, with Bailey Zappe making a case for the starting job after showing what he could do when given the opportunity.
However, things started to die down toward the end of the season with Zappe taking a backseat to Jones once again, and now it appears he’ll have to find a new home in the NFL, with Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reporting that he’s been released by the Patriots.

Although Zappe likely doesn’t have a future as a longtime starter in the NFL, he could make a career out of being a backup in the league, as he’ll need another shot after his short stint with New England.
It’s not beyond the realm of possibility that he gets that shot quickly if there is a team out there that liked what they saw from him last season.
