The New England Patriots have been searching for better quarterback play ever since Tom Brady decided to leave the franchise for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Brady was able to lead the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships, but since then Bill Belichick has had to try and make do without him.
Entering the 2023 season, New England will be counting on Mac Jones again to be their leader of the offense though he faces quite the uphill battle considering the strength of the AFC East.
The Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and Miami Dolphins all boast great teams which means the Patriots could once again be looking from the outside in when it comes to the playoffs.
Aside from Jones, the quarterback depth on the roster remains shaky as they have Matt Corral as his only backup.
Fans were surprised to hear when Bailey Zappe was waived before the start of Week 1 and he admitted that he was blindsided by the move via Evan Lazar of Patriots.com.
“The word that I got from somebody in Zappe’s camp was blindsided. ‘We were as blindsided as you,’” Lazar said.

Zappe showed some flashes of competent play in the 2022 campaign and he figured to be the backup in 2023.
Fortunately for New England, they were able to sign him to the practice squad when he cleared waivers and is expected to still compete with Corral for the No. 2 spot.
Generally, teams have a good idea of which players they can get away with waiving and signing again, so in this case it seems they were confident Zappe would be available.
