Patriots Release Veteran Defensive Tackle

The New England Patriots’ primary intent heading into the 2024 NFL season is to get new head coach Jerod Mayo up to speed as Bill Belichick’s successor and develop Drake Maye into a player the franchise can build around for years to come.

At this point, it seems that winning has taken a backseat in New England, as longtime owner Robert Kraft knows that a rebuild is necessary and that it may take some time, especially with a rookie quarterback like Maye.

That said, the Patriots are hoping to put a competitive team on the field, but no one is overly enthusiastic about their chances, especially after trading veteran linebacker Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons.

As if parting with arguably the team’s best player wasn’t an indication of where the Patriots are going this season, a veteran newcomer is also on his way out.

The Patriots have officially released defensive tackle Mike Purcell, who played 16 games for the Denver Broncos last season.

The release of Purcell gives the Patriots less depth and experience on the defensive line, which could prove costly, as it seems the defense might be the only reason they hope to win any games during the 2024 campaign.

Although it will be tough for the Patriots to win fewer than the four games they did last year, they might be trending in that direction.
