It isn’t all that uncommon to see a team part ways with a rookie before the start of the season in the NFL.
However, it is intriguing when it happens right at the start of training camp.
This is exactly the case in New England as the Patriots recently announced that they have released rookie linebacker Jontrey Hunter.
Hunter, who signed with the Pats as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia State, played six seasons of college football before heading to Foxborough.

Hunter was an all-conference performer at Georgia State while recording 234 total tackles and six sacks in his career.
Any college player who plays over 50 games certainly has enough experience to give themselves a chance at the next level.
With Hunter, he also demonstrated the ability to play both outside and inside linebacker in college, which is why he was able to find an NFL opportunity despite going undrafted.
The 24-year-old may now look for a new opportunity after things didn’t go the way that he hoped with the Patriots.
For New England, there is now an open roster spot.
Could they be making room for a possible trade to take place for a talented player such as Brandon Aiyuk?
Or, could this be just a normal roster decision with no corresponding move coming right now?
Time will tell.
