The New England Patriots keep making moves ahead of the start of the season.

According to USFL and XFL insider James Larsen, Bill Belichick’s team just signed USFL standout running back C.J. Marable (via Dov Kleiman).

Update: #Patriots signed former USFL RB C.J. Marable, per @JamesLarsenPFN

Marable was 2nd in the league in 2023 with almost 1,100 all-purpose yards.

The Patriots had worked out several big-profile running backs over the past couple of weeks, including the likes of Leonard Fournette and Ezekiel Elliott, and they were rumored to be in the mix for Dalvin Cook as well.

The fans will have to settle with Marable instead, who’s going to challenge Rhamondre Stevenson for some touches.

Marable is coming off a solid season with the Birmingham Stallions, rushing for over 500 yards and hauling in 235 receiving yards as well.

He thrived during his days at Coastal Carolina, boasting totals of 2,691 yards, 703 receiving yards, and 41 scores.

Now, he will compete with Kevin Harris, Ty Montgomery, and Pierre Strong Jr. for touches behind Stevenson.

Notably, the Patriots running back committee struggled in the preseason opener vs. the Houston Texans, with third-string QB Malik Cunningham leading all rushers with just 34 yards.

And while the offensive line wasn’t exactly at their best, the running game has been an ongoing concern at Foxborough for quite a while now.

With that in mind, Marable’s pass-catching skills bode perfectly for the Patriots offense.

Needless to say, not many USFL alumni have been able to find success in the league, but we’ve seen the Patriots make the most of every single asset they’ve had throughout Belichick’s tenure in charge of the team, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see him making a name for himself this season.
