The hype train has been full steam ahead for San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama coming into the 2023-24 NBA season, with everyone wanting to see if this 19-year-old kid from France is the real deal.
Only a handful of games into the season, the hype seems to be on point, especially after Wembanyama made easy work of Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns this week by dropping a career-high 38 points and beating a legitimate title contender by 20 points.
Wembanyama’s performance against Durant really turned some heads around the league and among some NBA legends, like former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce.
After seeing Wembanyama dominate against Durant and the Suns, Pierce took to Twitter on Friday morning and said he believes the Spurs superstar rookie is a combination of Kevin Garnett, Durant, and Tracy McGrady.

Ironically enough, fellow NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal recently made an unflattering comparison for Wembanyama, as he says the league has already seen a player like him in Bol Bol.
Even though Bol Bol has shown flashes of brilliance in his career at his size, Wembanyama seems to be a different beast entirely, which is what he put on display against Durant and company.
The real question for Wembanyama moving forward is whether he can stay healthy and continue to be productive while improving his all-around game.
With what he has shown in a small sample size, the Spurs have a player who can be the face of the franchise for at least the next decade and in the twilight of Gregg Popovich’s incredible coaching career.
