There are a number of quarterbacks in this year’s NFL Draft who could turn out to be great, and then there are a few who have a chance to become diamonds in the rough.
Michael Penix Jr. from the University of Washington falls into the latter category.
Experts have him getting drafted anywhere from later in the first round to possibly the third round, but Peter Schrager said on “The Dan Patrick Show” that he feels a team will trade up into the first round for Penix if he isn’t taken in the first 20 picks.

Schrager also said that the Las Vegas Raiders and Seattle Seahawks could look to snag Penix.
The Raiders could make sense, as they don’t have a legitimate NFL-level quarterback, but they do have talent elsewhere, including star wide receiver Davante Adams and fellow stud wideout Jakobi Meyers.
The Seahawks have won nine games in each of the past two seasons after being expected to plunge into the basement following the departure of Russell Wilson two years ago, but current QB Geno Smith will turn 34 in October.
This past season, Penix led Washington to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, where it lost to the University of Michigan, who was led by signal-caller J.J. McCarthy.
Penix threw for 4,903 yards and 36 touchdowns in 2023, and he finished second in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy.
This year’s quarterback crop could end up being the best the league has seen since 1983, when John Elway, Dan Marino, and Jim Kelly all entered at the same time.
