The Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks engaged in a heated exchange on Monday night during a wild series opener.

D-Backs rookie Corbin Carroll was hit by a pitch twice, which prompted the benches to clear.

Things got a little bit out of hand, with D-Backs manager Torey Lovullo even coming face-to-face with J.T. Realmuto.

However, the Phillies denied the notion that there was any intent to hit Carroll.

After the game, Phillies manager Rob Thomson echoed those sentiments, saying that there was no way that the Phils were trying to hit Carroll and put one of the fastest players in baseball on the basepaths, where he does a lot of his damage, per Bob Nightengale.

Thomson also said that it is not in his nature, nor the club’s to intentionally hit a batter.

The defending National League champions were in command for most of the game, but Arizona rallied late and took the series opener by a final score of 9-8.

Things certainly got heated earlier in the game, but Thomson vehemently denied that the Phillies had any intention of hitting Carroll, let alone putting one of the fastest runners in the league on first base.

Carroll getting hit twice is what prompted the benches to empty during Monday night’s tilt.

The Phillies have been playing decent baseball as of late, winning seven of their last 10 games.

But Monday night was a tough blow for a team that is starting to get hot, especially after the benches clearing incident.

The loss dropped the Phillies to 32-34.
