The Detroit Pistons have locked up star point guard Cade Cunningham.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Cunningham and the Pistons have agreed to terms on a five-year maximum rookie extension that goes for $224 million.

However, it could eventually be worth up to $269 million.

Detroit now gets to keep their best player in the fold for the foreseeable future.

The 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick and former All-Rookie performer is an ascending player in the league.

He is coming off of a career year in terms of PPG (22.7), APG (7.5), and three-point percentage (35.5%).

This team has made the playoffs twice in the last 15 years.

They also haven’t had a winning record since the 2015-2016 season.

But, Cunningham has been a bright spot for this squad, and he is clearly somebody that they want to build around.

Still just 22 years of age, Cunningham has his entire career ahead of him.

Other young players like guard Jaden Ivey and center Jalen Duren are other young players who have found success in their roles as well.

Look for Detroit to be a little bit more competitive in the coming years with this young core.

But make no mistake about it, Cunningham is the leader of the team moving forward because of what he can do with the ball in his hands.
