The 2016-17 Chicago Bulls should have been a terrific NBA team.
Featuring stars such as Jimmy Butler, Dwyane Wade, Robin Lopez, and Rajon Rondo, Windy City fans hoped the team could be true contenders.
They were not.
Instead, the Bulls ended eighth in the Eastern Conference and didn’t remain intact for long.
Speaking to JJ Redick on “The Old Man & the Three” podcast, Rondo spoke about why.
“The chemistry, it wasn’t there,” Rondo said about the failure of that team.
“There wasn’t really a connect between the old guys and the young and that is why there was so much friction throughout the year,” Rondo added.
At the time, young players like Michael Carter-Williams, Doug McDermott, Bobby Portis, and Cameron Payne were trying to find their footing in the league.
Meanwhile, Butler, Wade, and Rondo were deciding who was going to be the team’s leader.
All of this led to a disjointed squad with plenty of promise but not enough wins.
Rondo doesn’t sound too happy about his time in Chicago.
He mentioned that he was benched a lot during his sole season with the Bulls and even suggested that the team had a lack of leadership.
It is clear that there was conflict within the team that held it back.
Chicago was just a quick stop for Rondo, who was bouncing around many NBA teams at the time.
After Chicago, he moved to the the New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, and finally the Cleveland Cavaliers.
As for the Bulls, they have undergone a radical transformation since the 2016-17 season.
Apparently, everyone related to the team understood it wasn’t working out.
