During his many years in the NBA, Rajon Rondo repeatedly showed that the position of point guard is about so much more than just shooting the ball well.
Instead, it’s also about intrinsic leadership skills that help other players score more and raise the competitiveness of the entire team.
Speaking on “All The Smoke,” the retired champion said that’s exactly what the Phoenix Suns are currently missing.
He said their decision to “abandon” the traditional point guard position has left the team without the sort of direction it needs.
Rondo said his main goal during his career was to help other players achieve more.
He was a gifted shooter himself but was more focused on making plays, reading the floor, and getting the ball where it needed to be.
While the Suns are capable of doing all of that, their approach to the lineup this year hasn’t worked out as planned.
They have one of the most promising big threes in the league with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal.
Those are three supremely talented players and future Hall of Famers, however, they are not traditional point guards.
Therefore, according to Rondo, they are also not traditional leaders.
They are shoot-first players who are usually concerned with finding their best chances at making a bucket, not assisting teammates and creating ways for others to score.
This could prove to be a problem in the weeks ahead as the Suns attempt to capitalize on their potential and push into the playoffs.
If the Suns do not go far this year, there will be many questions about the roster and if it’s really working.
Even with all their talent, the Suns are not performing at the level that many people wanted or expected.
Is it because they lack the sort of leadership that Rondo and other point guards can provide?
