The Toronto Raptors are pivoting towards a new era, and that means prioritizing younger players and making financially sound decisions.

That left Gary Trent Jr. as the odd man out there.

The Duke product is just 25 years old, so he could still fit their timeline.

However, his financial aspirations have backfired, and he’s now scrambling to find himself a new deal.

According to a report by Josh Lewenberg (via Evan Sidery), the Raptors initially offered him $15 million a year, but Klutch Sports made him decline that offer.

Now, the offer is not on the table anymore, and similar players getting lesser deals didn’t do him any favors.

Sidery adds that Trent Jr reportedly wanted $25 million per year, which is clearly much more than a player of his caliber should’ve commanded, and that he would now be lucky to get something in the $12 million range.

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly keeping tabs on him.

This is a massive blow by his agents.

It’s not usual to see players misread the market so poorly, and he was clearly misguided throughout the entire process.

That’s why prominent agencies might not be for all players.

Hopefully, he’ll find the right situation to prove his worth with a short-term deal and get some of that money back in the future.
