The St. Louis Cardinals now find themselves at the epicenter of drama after a critical play on Tuesday night.

Tyler O’Neill was thrown out at the plate by Ronald Acuna Jr. in the bottom of the seventh inning, which helped the Atlanta Braves preserve a 4-1 win.

After the game, O’Neill and his manager Oli Marmol had a dispute over the center fielder’s effort when running towards home plate.

Marmol criticized O’Neill for a supposed lack of effort, while O’Neill was adamant that he was giving his full effort.

Ultimately, the situation has gotten worse, as Marmol continues to comment on the issue.

On Twitter, John Denton of MLB.com revealed another important piece of dialogue from Marmol.

#STLCards manager Oli Marmol: “There’s going to be a style of play we are known for & it’s going to involve effort & it’s gonna involve being relentless. It’s gonna involve being smart & we’re going to keep guys to that because that’s how you sustain being good for a long time.”

No matter which side of the issue you fall on, there’s no question that this is not a good look for the Cardinals.

Some will argue that O’Neill could have run harder, while others may view Marmol’s statements as a little bit harsh.

Both are fair points, but the issue could have easily been handled internally as opposed to the way it currently is being handled.

This has ultimately led to more drama and tension between the two, which is ultimately detrimental to the Cardinals.

The team’s loss ultimately resulted in their first series loss of the season.

Marmol was once again very clear about his stance on the issue and spoke to the overall culture of the team and what standards each player will be held to and how they are expected to play the game.
