With a season average of 18 points and 6.5 assists per game, it’s no surprise that multiple teams wanted Darius Garland this summer.
It’s also no surprise that the Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t wish to part ways with him.
According to a report from Hoops Wire, both the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs tried to trade for Garland this offseason.
Hoops Wire also reported that the Cavaliers told the Pelicans and Spurs that Garland wasn’t available for a trade.
The report goes on to state that when Donovan Mitchell signed an extension with the Cavs, he told the front office to keep both Garland and Jarrett Allen
This obviously influenced their position when the Pelicans and Spurs were trying to make a deal.
With Garland off the market, New Orleans and San Antonio moved on.
The Pelicans ended up getting Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks and the Spurs acquired Chris Paul, who was previously with the Golden State Warriors.
And now Garland is remaining in Cleveland and fans are hoping for good things in 2024-25.
The team had an up-and-down season last year.
They ended up as the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference but were constantly held back by multiple injuries to several players, including Garland.
If the squad can remain healthy, they might be able to have a bigger impact, especially under the new leadership of head coach Kenny Atkinson.
Garland will again be a centerpiece for the team but what happens if they fall short?
Will the Cavaliers say no to trading him again next summer if this season doesn’t go well?
