The start of the 2024 NFL season for the San Francisco 49ers is rapidly approaching, with the storied franchise set to host Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets on Sept. 9.
Even though that date is drawing near, the Niners don’t seem any closer to finding a resolution to the contract situation with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who wants a lucrative long-term extension or to be traded elsewhere.
Over the past month or so, there’s been nothing but trade speculation coming out of the Bay Area regarding Aiyuk’s immediate future, with the Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers mentioned as potential destinations.
Since the trade rumors surfaced, the Patriots have dropped out of the running, and the Browns may have also passed on making a deal, but the Steelers have been aggressive.
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, the Washington Commanders were also in the mix but did not want to part with what the 49ers were seeking, either Pro Bowl wideout Terry McLaurin or a first-round draft pick.
“That’s why Washington has not been involved in the Aiyuk sweepstakes even though he wants to go there,” Meirov said, via Steelers Depot.

At this point, it seems like there’s no telling which team Aiyuk could be playing for once Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season rolls around, as he could be suiting up for the 49ers again or heading to Pittsburgh or another destination that has yet to emerge.
It seems as though San Francisco will be fine with or without Aiyuk, which might be part of the problem in terms of getting a deal done because there’s no real sense of urgency.
However, frustration must be building for Aiyuk, who likely just wants this whole fiasco to be over with at this point.
