Chris Paul is one of the greatest point guards the NBA has ever seen.
However, he’s no longer the player he used to be, and he’s struggled with multiple injuries over the past five years or so.
Paul is nearing the end of his career, and while he could and should still be a very valuable player for multiple teams, his big salary is hampering the Golden State Warriors’ ability to pursue another star.
With that in mind, the Warriors might try to use his big contract to pull off a couple of moves in the offseason.
According to a report by Warriors insider Anthony Slater, they’re currently trying to push back his guarantee date from June 28 into July to provide more flexibility in potential trade talks (via Evan Sidery).
The Warriors have been actively searching for a large-scale upgrade utilizing Chris Paul’s $30 million non-guaranteed salary, per @anthonyVslater (https://t.co/iWUnLTu0Yi).

The Warriors want to use his $30 million contract as a salary-filler, as multiple other teams could absorb the final year of his contract to either use him as a veteran mentor, buy him out, or just get some draft capital for him.
Whatever the case, it seems highly likely that Paul will play for his third team in as many seasons, which is not so unusual for players entering the final passage of their careers.
When healthy, Paul was actually very good offensively for the Warriors this season.
Still, he spent plenty of time on the sidelines and has clearly lost a step defensively, so they could put all that money to better use by moving on from him while they still can.
