Being stuck in the purgatory of mediocrity in the NBA is the worst place to be, as being nowhere near winning a title while also being nowhere near the bottom five in the standings to get a great lottery pick means a franchise is about as far away from competing as it possibly can be.

This is where analyst Ric Bucher thinks one high-profile NBA team currently is, and he believes their odds of getting out of it this season are bleak.

On a recent episode of “Undisputed,” Bucher criticized the Los Angeles Lakers for being in that purgatory.

“The Lakers are stuck,” Bucher said. “The idea of turning water into wine isn’t realistic. … I see them being in the same position that they were last year, which is fighting their way into the playoffs and hoping to win a round. There’s no reason to believe otherwise at this point.”

Bucher pointed out that the Lakers have an unproven new head coach in JJ Redick, who could make an impact, but noted that the talent simply isn’t there and that they haven’t improved the roster much compared to last season.

The Lakers are coming off consecutive disappointing playoff exits at the hands of the Denver Nuggets and struck out this offseason after they got fans excited about the idea of potentially adding a big name like Paul George, Klay Thompson or Trae Young.

That left second-round pick Bronny James as their most notable addition, and he likely isn’t going to be enough to get the Lakers over the top.
