After a brilliant first season for head coach Brian Daboll, the New York Giants looked like a team on the rise in the NFC, with a bright future ahead as long as quarterback Daniel Jones could continue to play at a high level.
Unfortunately for New York, the 2023 NFL season turned out to be a disaster, with the Giants coming back down to earth and finishing the regular season with a disappointing record of 6-11.
Along with missing the NFL playoffs and showing no signs of progress after a stellar 2022 campaign, Jones went down with a season-ending injury that shed doubts on whether he’s the long-term option for the team under center.
Ahead of the 2023 NFL season, the Giants brass chose to sign Jones to a new deal while leaving star running Saquon Barkley in the lurch, which Rich Eisen finds baffling, as he said on The Rich Eisen Show.
“I still don’t understand, why wasn’t Saquon worth the McCaffrey money?” Eisen said.
As a result of this potential mistake by the Giants brass, the team could lose Barkley in NFL free agency during the offseason, as the veteran running back will likely have some suitors ready to bring him in.
So, after seemingly turning things around in 2022, the storied NFL franchise seems to be back to square one, as the Giants could lose Barkley this offseason and may not resemble the team that once showed so much promise.
It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out in New York and whether the team can avoid making more mistakes during the offseason.
