The Pittsburgh Steelers disappointed some of their fans when they announced Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback.
In reality, however, that was likely always the plan.
They signed Wilson even before knowing that Justin Fields would be available.
And even though he missed some time with a calf injury and HC Mike Tomlin stated that there would be an open competition for the job, that never seemed to be the case in reality.
That made sense, at least if you were to ask Richard Sherman.

In the latest edition of his podcast, the former Seattle Seahawks claimed that the reason why the Steelers had never finished below .500 with Tomlin at the helm is because he knew the formula to winning football games.
Sherman said that Tomlin was never going to roll with an unknown at the quarterback position because they don’t even need to throw the ball a lot to win.
As limited as Wilson has looked over the past couple of years, he still doesn’t turn the ball over a lot, and that kind of mistake-free football was good enough for Tomlin.
Granted, that’s not particularly exciting, but it doesn’t need to be.
With Tomlin and Arthur Smith calling the shots on offense, the Steelers will establish the run early and often, and their championship-caliber defense will always put them in a position to win some games.
It won’t be easy, and it definitely won’t be pretty, but it’s going to be efficient to at least stay afloat for another year.
