This year’s draft class in the NBA isn’t exactly thought of as a strong one, but there were some intriguing developments as the draft took place.

Guard Rob Dillingham out of the University of Kentucky was taken by the San Antonio Spurs with the No. 8 pick, and at first, it looked like the SEC Sixth Man of the Year would get to play with Victor Wembanyama.

However, he was quickly traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, a team that is ready to win now.

Dillingham admitted the trade was a surprise, per SiriusXM NBA Radio.

The Spurs are likely still a few years away from making the playoffs, but the Timberwolves are considered by many to be championship contenders right now.

They finished third in the Western Conference and upset the defending world champion Denver Nuggets in the second round of the playoffs before falling to the Dallas Mavericks in the conference finals.

Dillingham averaged 15.2 points and 3.9 assists a game while making 44.4 percent of his 3-point attempts during his lone season with the Wildcats, and he spent the season prior with the Cold Hearts, a team in the Overtime Elite league.

He’s just 6-foot-2 and about 175 pounds, but he is very quick, and he’s thus able to evade multiple defenders while looking for a good shot opportunity.

Moving forward, the Timberwolves could use some new blood in their backcourt — starting point guard Mike Conley is 36 years of age, and rising superstar Anthony Edwards cannot be expected to be their main playmaker.

Perhaps Dillingham will be able to help in that regard.
