ESPN has let go of some prominent commentators and personalities in recent months, in a set of moves that were reportedly made in order to cut costs.
The network laid off NBA commentators Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson, both of whom were former coaches, and on the NFL side, it laid off former quarterback Robert Griffin III earlier this month.
Griffin opened up about leaving ESPN and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to be a part of the network.
However, he did admit that he was surprised by the cut.

Griffin joined ESPN three years ago as an analyst for both the NFL and NCAA football, and after a year, he became one of the faces of “Monday Night Countdown,” the network’s preview show that proceeds “Monday Night Football.”
On that show, his place will now be taken by Jason Kelce, the star Philadelphia Eagles center who recently retired.
Griffin, of course, was once a potential-laden NFL QB who was taken with the No. 2 pick in the 2012 draft by the then-Washington Redskins.
He electrified the long-suffering franchise as a rookie, throwing for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding 815 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, but his first season ended with LCL and ACL injuries that doomed the rest of his career.
He played six more seasons in the league, but he was never able to even come close to the level of production he had in 2012.
Griffin has never been shy about expressing his opinions on social media, and thus perhaps he will get hired by another network not too long from now.
