During the NFL offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers decided to shake things up at the quarterback position, with the storied franchise having grown tired of flaming out in the first round of the NFL playoffs while struggling on the offensive side of the football.
With the Steelers determined to make drastic changes, they traded Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles and signed veteran Russell Wilson to be their starter come Week 1.
However, the Steelers’ brass wasn’t content just signing Wilson as it went out and traded for Justin Fields, who was pushed out of town by the Chicago Bears to make way for No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams.
That move by Pittsburgh was surprising, as the consensus was that Wilson would be under center moving forward, but adding Fields into the mix complicated things as he’s younger, more mobile and also capable of being a starter in the NFL.
It sparked a quarterback competition, which came down to the wire, with the veteran ultimately beating out the younger QB for the starting job, settling the tone for the Steelers heading toward Week 1.
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III reacted to the news that Wilson won the starting job in Pittsburgh while on “The Rich Eisen Show.”
“Russell Wilson being named the starter was always the smart move, right move and best move for the Steelers and Justin Fields’ long-term future,” Griffin wrote on X.

Griffin is likely right in his assessment, as moving forward with a proven veteran over a younger option seems like the smart move, because if it doesn’t work, the Steelers can always give Fields a shot.
It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out in Pittsburgh and if Wilson is the right man for the job to fix the problems on offense during the 2024 campaign.
