The New York Jets will kick off a make-or-break season with one of the toughest opponents they’ll have to face all season.
More than that, it’ll also be an emotional matchup for HC Robert Saleh.
Before joining the Jets, Saleh had an opportunity to coach under Kyle Shanahan, serving as the Niners’ defensive coordinator.
When asked about that, the head coach got emotional, stating that he would be indebted to the Shanahan family and the Niners organization forever (via Coach Yac).
Jets HC Robert Saleh talks about what his time with the 49ers meant to him:
“I’ll forever be indebted to the Shanahan family. Papa Shanahan, who had a tremendous influence on me. Kyle obviously, challenged me every day to look outside the box, John and his tutelage. I mean, it’s… pic.twitter.com/KGTMoz7YSM

Notably, if he doesn’t get on track with the Jets this season, he might find himself knocking on their door to get a job again next season.
While he was there, the Niners had one of the best defenses in the league, and he’s clearly taken that expertise with him to New York as well.
Even so, he’s got an 18-33 record in three head-coaching seasons, and while he’s had some tough breaks, particularly at the quarterback position, there’s simply no excuse not to get it done this time around.
If the Jets don’t make the playoffs or play like a legitimate Super Bowl contender, this might be the end of the road for Saleh in the Big Apple.
The Jets have everything they need to get over the hump, and there will be no more room for excuses.
That’s why it’ll be so crucial to get the season started on the right foot and beat his former team on the road.
