The Houston Rockets are looking to compete at the highest level right now.

They don’t want to win in the future; they want to do it in 2024-25, and they feel like they’re closer to that after one year with Ime Udoka.

That’s why they’re going to be quite meticulous and thorough with every decision they make in the future.

Notably, that includes giving contract extensions to their young stars.

According to a report by Kelly Iko of The Athletic, they’re not likely to extend Jalen Green or Alperen Sengun right now.

Both are eligible to sign max rookie contract extensions.

They could get five-year deals worth up to $224.4 million, and while the team is clearly interested in having them for years to come, they won’t jump the gun to get a deal done.

Houston has reportedly held conversations with their agents and will continue to do so, but Iko doesn’t think they’re going to give the players that kind of money right now.

Recently, fellow members of the 2021 class, such as Cade Cunningham and Scottie Barnes got their paydays, landing $236 million and $270 million, respectively.

There are still doubts about Jalen Green and his consistency — or lack thereof — and whether he’s going to be able to lead the team to success.

As for Sengun, he’s grown to become the team’s best player and a potential building block, but he’s coming off a serious season-ending injury.

That’s why it makes sense for the Rockets to be careful about the kind of deal they give them.
