The Cleveland Cavaliers have a lot of tough decisions to make this offseason after losing to the Boston Celtics in the second round of the playoffs.
There have been many questions about how well Cleveland’s roster fits together, and a second consecutive uneventful playoff run has added more fuel to the fire heading into the offseason as the Houston Rockets are one of many teams who reportedly have their eye on Cleveland’s biggest star.
The Athletic’s Kelly Iko reported that the Rockets have maintained interest in Donovan Mitchell for months and are continuing to monitor his situation in Cleveland as they are prepared to pounce if the star guard becomes available for a trade.

How might that impact what happens with the No. 3 pick?https://t.co/EGD1NoEWKh pic.twitter.com/KddCpmyFfU

The Rockets recently lucked into the No. 3 pick via the 2024 Draft Lottery, and Iko added that could be a nice asset to include in any potential trade for Mitchell.
The Cavs lost 4-1 to the Celtics as Mitchell and fellow All-Star Jarrett Allen both endured injuries in the series and now both will surely have their futures questioned.
Mitchell has one more year left on his contract for about $35 million before he hits a player option for 2025-26 that he will surely decline, and the Cavs are nearing the time where they have to decide to either extend him or move him.
Mitchell’s fit alongside Darius Garland has been questionable since he came to Cleveland, as has Allen’s fit alongside Evan Mobley, and this is the offseason where the team has to decide if the situation is salvageable or if it’s time to pivot.
