Roger Goodell Talks Having An NFL Team Overseas

The popularity of the NFL seems to increase by the day.

Games are slated to be played around the world over the next several years, traveling to Germany, the United Kingdom, and Mexico, to name a few.

As international games continue to be a regular part of this league, many have wondered if an overseas team is next on the docket.

In a recent conversation with NBC’s Mike Tirico via Ari Meirov, Roger Goodell gave some insight.

Goodell noted the possibility of an overseas team is “possible,” but also discussed that the NFL needs to find a way to do it “competitively.”

Asked about having a team permanently overseas, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told @miketirico on NBC that he never rules out anything.

“I think it’s possible. The debate we’ve always tried to work on is if you can do it competitively, and do it in a way where it’s fair, not… pic.twitter.com/m3S4Gg69as

There are a lot of logistics to iron out if an NFL team were stationed in a different country.

Factors such as television deals, travel time, and quality of play are all contributing factors that could make this a difficult situation.

There is a built-in infrastructure in the United States for athletes to help guide their football journey.

Beginning with youth and up to the collegiate system, there are programs to provide elite athletes an opportunity.

Other countries do not have this level of advancement and opportunity.

This one piece of information could squash these conversations before they have started.

If other countries do not have a significant pool of NFL-caliber players to pick from, an overseas team might not happen.

There are recent examples of overseas players joining existing NFL teams, who have performed with varying degrees of success thus far.

Will the NFL ever have a team that isn’t based in the United States?
