Rudy Gobert has been battling with expectations for years now, especially since coming to the Minnesota Timberwolves at the start of last season.

Speaking on “The Old Man & The Three,” via Wolves Lead, Gobert spoke about how some people have the wrong idea about him, especially when it comes to his ability to defend.

“There’s been a false narrative that I couldn’t guard the perimeter,” Gobert said.

He added, “Guys see me switching onto them and I see a smile on their face like it’s good for them. And then, a lot of times, they realize that it’s not.”

When Gobert came to the Timberwolves at the start of the 2022-23 season, people expected the very best from him and the team.

But the team fell short last year and only this season finally started to prove their value and potential.

As for Gobert, he has been red-hot this year, scoring 13.7 points and 12.9 rebounds.

Conventional wisdom says that he’s on his way to winning Defensive Player of the Year once again, a true testament to how much he can truly block people.

Some other stars might assume that Gobert can’t shut down opponents from the perimeter, but his numbers this year prove that isn’t the case.

The real question about Gobert is just how well he can do in the playoffs.

There are some talented big men and supremely skillful shooters in the Western Conference – what can Gobert do against them?

Perhaps most importantly, does he have what it takes to limit Nikola Jokic if the Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets face off in the Western Conference Finals?

Gobert claims he’s shown that he’s more talented than people think and now he has to prove that again in the playoffs.
