The Minnesota Timberwolves have a special talent and a superstar in the making.

Anthony Edwards finally turned out to be the leader they needed.

However, as great a player as Edwards is, he cannot win on his own.

That’s why he needs his veteran sidekicks to step up, and that hasn’t been the case thus far.

Talking about that, French big man Rudy Gobert compared Edwards to a young Dwyane Wade, who led the Miami Heat to an NBA championship at age 22 (via Sam Amick and NBACentral).

“We’ve got Ant, who’s 22, and Dwyane Wade won a championship at that age. (Wade) was the guy, but he was surrounded by some other veterans who helped him grow. I think that’s the way I feel about our team. Ant is not in his… pic.twitter.com/r1wSXDS0Qw

Gobert claimed that Edwards was capable of leading the team to a ring, but he needed the veterans and role players to rally around him and take care of business as well.

That sounds great on paper, but that hasn’t been the case in the Western Conference Finals thus far.

Edwards wasn’t at his best in the first two games of the series, but he showed up big time in Game 3.

Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns, however, weren’t particularly sound.

The Timberwolves are now one loss away from going home.

And while Edwards should be able to get back to this stage many more times in the future, the team will need to do some soul-searching and reconsider some of the players they have on their roster, as they just haven’t been mentally up to the challenge.

Edwards has a bright future, and they can’t afford to have anybody else dragging him down.
