Even though there seemed to be a bit of a debate at the time, the Minnesota Timberwolves never had a single doubt about Anthony Edwards’ potential as a franchise player.

There were some concerns about his lack of defensive commitment and expertise, but there were flashes of his potential on that end of the floor.

It’s safe to say that those doubts are no longer there, as he’s taken great pride in his defense, and has made huge strides as a stopper as well.

That’s why fellow defensive star Rudy Gobert showered him with praise.

Following their road win against the Phoenix Suns, the big man claimed to be in awe of the fact that Edwards was just 22 years old, praising him for his work ethic and determination to get better (via NBA).

“I’ve seen him be willing to learn and get better and it’s paid huge dividends for our team… it’s crazy to think that he’s just 22 years old.”

Edwards isn’t like most young players; he’s just wired differently.

He has a competitive drive and nature that you don’t see in today’s game very often, not to mention a maniac-like drive to one-up and outwork every single guy on the court, whether it’s a teammate or an opponent.

We’re watching him blossom right before our eyes, and the fact that he continues to be a work in progress should scare the rest of the league.

Even if the Timberwolves don’t win the NBA championship this season or even make it to the NBA Finals, Edwards has officially arrived, and he’s going to be one of the faces of the league for many, many more years to come.
