The Pittsburgh Steelers just made a decision about their quarterback.

Mike Tomlin will roll with Russell Wilson to start the year, and, all things considered, that doesn’t seem like much of a surprise.

The Steelers had reportedly promised him the job when they first signed him.

And even though Tomlin made it sound like there was an open competition for the job, they never dealt with it that way in practice or the preseason.

Nevertheless, the fact of the matter is that Justin Fields is faster, more athletic, and a better player for RPO situations.

With that in mind, the media asked Wilson whether he’d push for his colleague to have some offensive packages (via Aaron Becker).

“I think that, obviously, Justin’s ability to find the end zone, over the years, I’ve been able to score a lot of touchdowns, him as well. Listen, whatever it takes to find another touchdown in there.” pic.twitter.com/KWR0EdRQJM

Wilson first praised Fields for his ability to scramble and get into the endzone, but he claimed that he’s also had his fair share of rushing touchdowns in his career.

Then, he stated that he’d support whatever it took to put up points on the scoreboard.

On the one hand, Wilson is a proven veteran with a Super Bowl-winning pedigree, so it somewhat made sense to have him as the starter.

On the other hand, he’s not the player he used to be, and based on personnel and offensive schemes — not to mention age and upside — Fields may have been the better choice there.

Whatever the case, even if he beat Fields for the job to start the season, he will still have to hold onto it for 17 weeks, and this is going to be a season-long debate.
