The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a real battle for their starting quarterback spot, but some have been confident that veteran Russell Wilson would win that competition.
That belief has grown stronger over the last few days as the Steelers prepare for their Week 1 game at the Atlanta Falcons.
Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf believes Wilson will be their QB1, and he even said that Wilson was their QB1 from the moment he signed with them, per SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Leaf did add that Wilson starting isn’t set in stone and that he will have to play well and clean things up in a few areas, particularly the number of times he gets sacked.
Wilson was sacked 45 times last season, and the year prior he led the NFL with 55 taken sacks.
He is coming off a frustrating two years with the Denver Broncos in which he saw his production drop off considerably and missed the playoffs in both seasons.
Pittsburgh may not be a legitimate Super Bowl contender, but they do have a better overall roster than the Broncos have had the last couple of years, particularly on defense.
That defense should give Wilson plenty of support so that he won’t have to be his vintage self all the time in order for them to make the playoffs.
Some feel head coach Mike Tomlin lacks the ability to coach a top-tier offense, but he has never finished with a losing record since taking over the Steelers in 2007, and he could have the players he needs to win his first playoff game since 2016.
